In this function, the player enters the role of a detective working for Ace Detective Agency. This role includes a name, rank, and set of statistics. The name was chosen by the player, but the rank and statistics are determined by the number of cases the player has solved or failed to solve. If this is the player's first case, the program creates a character file for the player.

The player starts with a rank of Gumshoe. The difficultly of the case is largely based on the player's rank, so a Gumshoe would not be given a difficult case. Difficult cases tend to have more cities and more false clues, which are discussed at length for later functions.
