Fellow Students,
I'm writing to you on behalf of the founding fathers of our nation. While
that sounds arrogant, I say it because I cannot claim credit for any of the
ideas they had when they came up with the United States.
The US is founded on the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and I'm sure you all know quite well. Interestingly, less than half the country was originally allowed to vote to achieve those goals, as women, children, and blacks were all disenfranchised. But the principles remained, and over the years, those voting restrictions have been lifted, to the point where now everyone over 18 years old can vote.
But most don't, unfortunately, and what happens is the politicians, who have made government their careers, must cater to those who do in order to get their jobs back. We go to school in a uniquely college town, filled with bright young minds, who, if properly organized, could be the voice that is catered to.
My proposal is that we do just that--organize. Get everyone registered to vote, as part of the mass voter registration drive that will coincide with many class registration days this coming fall, and then get everyone out to vote, for a new perspective on how this city is run. I pledge that as mayor I will extend the hours of operation of the T, allow for alcohol sales all night, as well as on Sunday, and I will also expand the services provided to the citizens of this city.
Please think about voting. It helps you and everyone around you. And sure it sounds cheezy, but I really do Kare.
