Friday, 6:00 PM, Battery Kimball Park

Gil

We stopped by the Safeway bought a few bags of chips and a 2-liter of Coke. Not that healthy, but standard teenage fair, I guess. I pulled the car into the gravel lot at the base of the biggest grassy hill. The park had been something or other during the Civil War, but there was nothing now to tell you that except for the name, Battery Kimball. The only other car in the lot was a black Ford sedan. Peering across at it I realized that there were in fact two people in the car, both wearing suits. I made a mental note to mention this to Fritz. We ran up the hill to meet the others

We go and get Gil's car, a monkey-shit brown El Camino, which his is obviously proud of. No accounting for taste. If you are not familiar with the model, it looks as though someone squished a pickup truck, or ripped the back off a Chevy station wagon. We pick up food and rendez vous with the others.

Gil relates the story of the cop, and the others ooh and aah a bit, but then they settle back down to talking about Fritz' exploits.

I feel deflated from arguing with Lindsay. Sometimes it's like talking to a brick wall. You just can't seem to gain an inch. She won't accept my premises and won't buy my logic.

Gil and Leisl are back. They look like they'd make a cute couple. They have my blessing when they realize they like each other.

I sit back and concentrate on planning my next attack on my mystery computer, as Gil talks about his run-in with the Law.

After a long while, Gil and Leisl show up.
"Gil got into some trouble with the cops," says Liesl, by way of explanation
"What?" I say. Lindsay looks up with a concerned expression.
"It wasn't anything big," he says, "I just got my red box taken away."
"Wait," I say, "Yours looks just like a normal tone dialer. No extra switches or anything. How could they have known it was a red box?"
"They didn't. The cop just took it."
"That's fucked up."
"Where were you?" asks Fritz.
"Outside of Sears. Pretty public. This is scary though, that the cops have a clue. We should all be careful in that area."

My head feels a bit better by the time Gil shows up again. It looks like he and Leisl are getting pretty tight, which is ok. She seems nice enough, and it is probably about time he go over his last girlfriend.

He got caught using a red box in public, which just seems stupid to me. I think that shook them all up a bit, but probably won't have any lasting effect. Why they do these things for fun is beyond me.
