ACADEMIA, ART, AND LIFE - AN ESSAY

This essay explores the nature of artistry within academic life. It makes no claims to scholarship - its aim is simply to share reflections from my journey through art and academia.

  • At its core, the essay seeks to expand the definition of an artist beyond traditional creative fields, suggesting that artistry is defined not by domain, but by how and why one works. This perspective gives rise to a three-tiered framework of roles - technician, craftsman, and artist - distinguished by the degree of autonomy in setting goals and designing processes to achieve the goals. Within this framework, the essay examines related themes such as talent, mastery, inspiration, creativity, and artistic integrity, especially as they arise in teaching, research, and the broader landscape of academic life.

Our framework bears conceptual connection to a range of scholarly sources in sociology, psychology, science, and education, which for the most part lie outside my own experience and expertise. I note, however, that the three-role structure and terminology introduced in the essay, along with its application to teaching, research, and academic life, and its connection to artistry, seem to be largely original.

As noted in the preface, the core ideas of this essay date to 2009, when I visited Yuan Ze University in Taiwan, and was invited to give a general lecture, unrelated to my technical field. Since then, I have continued to explore the subject through reading, reflection, discussion, and experience. By the early 2020s, during the COVID period, the shape of the essay had largely taken form. More recently, AI editing tools, including ChatGPT, were helpful in a number of ways: supporting literature research, providing editorial assistance, and refining language, structure, and tone.
