this workshop class will offer you a space to experiment with the creation and critique of various forms of digital poetry using new media. you'll be asked to create digital poetry which you will share with us in class for discussion-discussion of your poetry is the primary focus of the class. we'll also listen to some invited speakers and visit the list gallery for its show on digital poetry. you are encouraged to collaborate with fellow students on assignments as needed. students are encouraged to help other students solve technical questions.

you'll be graded on your developing portfolio in a non-competitive fashion. the class will, I hope, give you a space to develop your creative talents.

there are four major creative assignments: You'll be asked to create:

  1. a hypertext poem
  2. an animated poem
  3. a poem within a digital video or game structure.
  4. a final project, which may be a development of any of the previous assignments.

we should have access to PDAs through a grant originally funded by iCampus, and you may employ any sort of new digital media for any assignment as you see fit. surprise us.

some presentations early in the semester will draw material from two hardcopy sources: Digital Poetics: The Making of E-Poetries by Loss Pequeno Glazier (Univ. of Alabama Press, 2002) and The Language of New Media by Lev Manovich (MIT Press, 2001). you'll be directed to look at relevant web sites as well. students are encouraged to suggest supplementary sources they have found useful.

since the value of a class like this is your discussion of each other's work, attendance is required.
