Building 1
On Monday, September 15, lab renovation work on the second floor of Building 1 is scheduled to begin in room 1-225. Construction hours are 6AM – 2PM. Major disruption and noisy work are scheduled before 8AM, with some occasional light noise expected for the duration of the workday. This project is scheduled through mid-November.

Building 6C
As part of the Institute’s investment in infrastructure renewal, crews are scheduled to add capacity to the air handling and exhaust systems in Buildings 4, 6, 6C, and 8. This work will improve the distribution network and optimize energy efficiency in order to enable future renovations.
Preparatory activities are underway with mechanical shaft work in Building 8. Typical construction hours are 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM, with some weekend and overnight work expected.
Construction is planned to be completed as detailed below, including material delivery to the roof of Buildings 6C and 8, material assembly on the roof and in the penthouse, and ductwork installation. The project team is working closely with the occupants impacted by this work and has been meeting with key contacts in each area to review the proposed schedule and share the scope of work associated with the project.
Building 6C penthouse work and Building 8 roof work – June 2025 through January 2026
Crews are assembling and installing a new air handling unit on the roof and in the penthouse of Building 6C. At the same time, crews will install an exhaust unit on the roof of Building 8. During construction, noise and vibration from structural interventions are expected, with major disruption scheduled for before 9:00 AM. Installation of these units is scheduled through January 2026.
Building 8 ductwork installation – June 2025 through January 2026
Overnight work is underway to convert the former Building 8 freight elevator shaft to a mechanical shaft for ductwork. In June, crews will begin installing ductwork on all floors of Building 8.
Most work will take place in the former elevator machine room, and access to the elevator vestibules will be restricted to MIT Facilities and construction personnel during work hours. On the upper floors, crews will travel down the Building 8 corridors to the Building 4 elevator for the loading and unloading of materials. Additionally, access from the MIT.nano courtyard to Building 8 via corridor 8-000CE will be restricted during work hours as equipment is loaded out from the area. Signage will be posted. This phase of work is scheduled through January 2026.

Building 13
First-floor lab
Beginning Monday, August 4, construction is scheduled for the Ji Lab, located on the first floor of Building 13. Anticipated work hours are Monday through Friday from 5AM-3PM. Heavy noise is planned to conclude by 9AM daily, with some occasional light noise for the duration of the workday. This project is scheduled through the end of May 2026.
As part of this project, a new mechanical space will be constructed on the exterior of Building 13 next to the loading dock bay. Access to the loading dock will not be impacted. The door to the bicycle storage area will be modified to accommodate this new structure; access to this space will be maintained at all times.
While this work is underway, a temporary partition wall will be set up in the interior corridor of 13-1012 that will slightly narrow the hallway, though the corridor will remain accessible. The partition is scheduled to remain in place through the fall. Construction activities will be predominantly contained within the new lab space and mechanical shafts; any work outside these areas will be coordinated with abutting occupants as needed. Signage will be posted.

Signage installation
Beginning Tuesday, September 16, crews are scheduled to install campus wayfinding signage in front of Building 13 along the LRR Innovation Corridor, weather permitting. Anticipated work hours are 6AM-2:30PM each day. This work is scheduled through the end of September.
Intermittent loud noise from a vacuum truck and excavation equipment needed to install the foundation of the signage is anticipated throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, September 16-17. Minimal noise is expected for the remainder of the project. The work area will be cordoned off, and the area will remain accessible. Please use caution when traveling around the worksite.

Building 16
Beginning Monday, September 22, several office, community, and classroom spaces are scheduled to be renovated on the sixth floor of Building 16. This project is scheduled through mid-December.
Anticipated work hours are 6AM-2PM from Monday through Friday. Heavy noise is planned to conclude by 8AM daily, with some occasional light noise for the duration of the workday. The corridor on the sixth floor of Building 16 will be closed during construction. See the map for detour information. Signage will be posted.

Building 32
As part of the Institute’s investment in infrastructure renewal, crews are scheduled to renovate the façade of Building 32. This work includes masonry and metal panel renewal, and cleaning and restoring the surfaces of the façade and some roof sections. Construction hours are 7AM – 3PM. During construction, some local noise and vibration are expected. This project is scheduled to continue through January 2026.
Construction is planned to be completed in phases, beginning at the Compton Court Stairs, the Elevator Tower, and the Peter Tower. The project team is working closely with the occupants impacted by this work and has been meeting with key contacts in each area to review the proposed schedule and share the scope of work associated with the project.
Phase 2a: July 2024 through February 2025
Construction activities are underway with the installation of scaffolding and swing staging for Phase 2a at the Compton Court Stairs, the Elevator Tower, and the Peter Tower. The Compton Court Stairs will be inaccessible during this phase. The scope of work includes masonry repairs, stair tread repointing, selective metal façade and roof panel replacement and installation, sealant replacement, and the cleaning of the façade and panels.
Phase 2b: February 2025 through January 2026
Beginning in February of 2025, the areas of work will switch for Phase 2b, which will include the Dreyfoos South Tower, Gates South Tower, Lower Gates East, East Entry, Collier Entry, Lecture Hall 123, and the Amphitheater. During this time, access to the Collier Entry and Amphitheater will be restricted and occupants will be redirected to alternate points of entry throughout the Stata Center.
For this phase, the scope of work will include scaffolding and swing staging installation, masonry repairs, roof installation, roof coping, removal and replacement of deteriorated brick, sealant replacement, and the cleaning of the façade and panels.

Building 56
On Monday, September 22, an office suite renovation project is scheduled to begin in Rooms 56-651 and 56-669 on the sixth floor of Building 56. This project is scheduled through the end of October. Anticipated work hours are 6AM-2PM from Monday through Friday. Heavy noise is planned to conclude by 8:30AM daily, with some occasional light noise for the duration of the workday. These activities will be contained within the rooms. Signage will be posted.

Building E40
On Monday, May 19, renovation of the fourth floor of Building E40 is scheduled to begin. Anticipated work hours are weekdays from 6AM-2PM. Heavy noise is planned to conclude by 8:30 AM daily, with some occasional light noise for the duration of the workday. Signage will be posted. This project is scheduled through October.

Building W18
In order to prep and install a fire lane and walkways from Amherst Street to the Linde Music Building, crews will be performing site work this week and next week, weather permitting. Work hours are 7AM-6PM daily. Some noise is anticipated.
On Tuesday, October 14, concrete operations are scheduled in the area. During this time, the fire lane will be inaccessible from Amherst Street for a 24-hour period, through midday Wednesday.
On Thursday, October 16, the access lane to the Linde Music Building from Amherst Street is scheduled to close while crews pave the area. From 7AM-3PM, access will be restricted, and pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles will be redirected to navigate around the closure and access the Kresge Oval. An officer will be onsite, and signage will be posted to direct traffic around the area.

Building W20
The MIT COOP located in the Stratton Student Center, Building W20, is undergoing renovations. During this time, a temporary COOP store will be established nearby in Building W20-104; this temporary location will be clearly marked. Regular construction activities are planned for Monday through Friday, from 6AM – 3PM. Some noise is expected throughout the day. This project is scheduled through late October.
To accommodate this renovation, crews are scheduled to complete demolition work overnight from Monday through Friday, July 21-25. Anticipated hours are 11PM – 6AM each night. Some heavy noise and local vibration are expected during these times. Signage will be posted.

Building W41
Construction activities are underway as MIT proceeds with the redevelopment of the Metropolitan (Met) Warehouse, Building W41. The adaptive reuse of the Met Warehouse will provide a new home for the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P), including classrooms, design studios, research spaces, faculty offices, and areas for meetings and collaborative activities. Additionally, the space will house the new MIT Morningside Academy for Design and create a location for the largest community-wide makerspace on campus managed by Project Manus. The anticipated target completion date for this project is 2026.
Below you’ll find an overview and high-level schedule for the major phases of construction. Standard hours are 7 AM – 6 PM, Monday-Friday, with some weekend and evening work expected. Please note that the schedule is subject to change.
Vassar Street lane shift
In order to accommodate final site work for the Met Warehouse project, traffic on Vassar Street in front of Building W41 is scheduled to shift. Anticipated hours are Monday-Friday from 7AM – 5PM, with occasional weekend work from 9AM – 5PM. Traffic patterns will be occasionally altered from June through November 2025.
Vassar Street is scheduled to remain open, but depending on the work scheduled each day, two-way traffic may be intermittently stopped. Cyclists and vehicular traffic will continue to share the westbound lane. A police detail will be onsite to direct traffic around the area. Please use caution when traveling in the area. The southern sidewalk will remain open and accessible for pedestrians and eastbound cyclists.
Vassar Street sidewalk closure
For the duration of the project, the sidewalk and cycle track adjacent to the building along Vassar Street will close to pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the project. The westbound cycle track will be detoured to create a shared lane on Vassar Street (the eastbound lane will be unaffected). Pedestrians will be directed to the south side of Vassar Street via existing crossings at the New Vassar Residence Hall and at Mass Ave.
Mass Ave southbound sidewalk closure: October 15 – November 15
In order to complete construction work for the Met Warehouse project, the southbound sidewalk in front of Building W41 adjacent to Mass Ave is scheduled to close to pedestrians beginning Wednesday, October 15, and continuing through Saturday, November 15.
During this time, pedestrians will be directed to cross the street at the corner of Vassar Street and again at the corner of Albany Street. Vehicular and cyclist traffic will not be impacted. A police detail will be onsite to direct people around the area.

LRR Innovation Corridor
On Thursday, October 16, crews are scheduled to perform stormwater drain line cleaning between Buildings 24, 31 & 39 in the LRR Innovation Corridor. Anticipated hours are 8AM-1PM. A vacuum truck will be onsite for the duration of this work. High levels of noise from machinery are anticipated.
The alley between Buildings 24 & 31 will be cordoned off, and the driveway will be inaccessible to vehicles during work hours. Parking along the northern side of Building 24 will be restricted. Vehicular traffic into the Innovation Corridor will be redirected to the Building 35 & 37 alley from Vassar Street or the Building 9 underpass from Mass Ave. Note vehicular access to the driveway behind Buildings 34, 38 & 39 will remain available from the Building 39 underpass.
The corridor will remain open to pedestrians. Signage will be posted. Please use caution when traversing the area.

Vassar Street
Beginning Monday, September 15, overnight utilities work is scheduled to commence along Vassar Street and the northern sidewalk adjacent to Buildings 41 & 42. During this work, the Vassar Street eastbound travel lane, between Massachusetts Avenue and Main Street, is scheduled to close nightly to accommodate the utilities crew; the sidewalk adjacent to Buildings 41 & 42 will be closed throughout the project. Anticipated hours are weeknights from 7PM-5AM. This steam line repair work will generate some noise from concrete cutting. This project is scheduled through November 2025.
Police will be present during these activities, and the Vassar Street closure area will be clearly marked. Signage will be placed to help direct vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. Access to all buildings will be maintained. Please use caution when traveling in the area. See the map for details.
Overnight eastbound lane closure – weeknights from 7PM-5AM
Each weeknight through the subsequent morning, between 7PM and 5AM, crews will establish a protected work zone in the roadway and sidewalk of Vassar Street adjacent to Buildings 41 & 42 with temporary fencing. This work site will impede vehicular travel in the eastbound direction. During these times, Vassar Street from Main Street to Mass Ave will be one-way westbound for vehicles. A temporary cycle lane will be established with protective barriers in the westbound direction around the site during work hours. For the duration of the project, pedestrians will be redirected to cross the street at Mass Ave and mid-block to the southern sidewalk to bypass the work area.
The travel lane and cycle lane will be plated and reopened each morning, and the temporary fencing moved into the sidewalk area. The cycle lane work area will be plated with recessed, anti-skid plates.
Vehicular detour – weeknights from 7PM-5AM
Eastbound vehicular traffic, including shuttles and buses, will be detoured around the area from Mass Ave to Albany Street onto Main Street each night after 7PM. Access for abutters in Stata Garage, the childcare lot, and the Buildings 35 & 37 driveway and 39 underpasses will be maintained from Vassar Street via Main Street.
Shuttle and bus detour – weeknights after 7PM
Beginning at 7PM each weeknight, the Tech Shuttle will be detoured around the area to Albany Street. During these times, the Tech Shuttle stop located in front of Building 35 on Vassar Street (Vassar Street at Mass Ave) will be temporarily relocated to Albany Street in front of Building N10. The MBTA CT2 bus will also be affected; see the MBTA site for details. Please be prepared for potential delays.

Non-MIT work
Greater Cambridge Energy Program with impacts on Ames Street, Vassar Street, and Memorial Drive
Construction activities are underway as Eversource proceeds with the Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP). This project will have significant impacts on Ames Street, Vassar Street, and Memorial Drive through 2028. Information about the project is available at Eversource’s website; community members can also subscribe to receive regular updates about the project directly from Eversource.

Members of the Eversource project team will be on campus for Community Q&A sessions at key milestones during the project. Session dates can be found on the site as well.

Ames Street between Memorial Drive and Amherst Street – underway
Ames Street from Memorial Drive to Amherst Street is closed to vehicular traffic through March 2026. All vehicular access to this segment will be restricted at this time; vehicles will be redirected to use Wadsworth Street to navigate around the closure for access to East Campus. Note that pedestrian and cyclist access will remain available during construction.
High levels of noise from excavation equipment and a vacuum truck are anticipated. Police will be onsite to assist with vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and signage will be posted. No shutdowns are anticipated during this work.
Ames Street from Amherst Street to Main Street – underway
Ames Street from Amherst to Main Street is currently narrowed to one lane during work hours. Traffic through this area will be one-way northbound from Amherst Street to the intersection of Main Street; Ames Street will be plated over and returned to a two-way pattern after work hours each day. Southbound access will be restricted, and vehicles will be redirected to use Wadsworth Street to navigate around the closure for access to East Campus. Note that pedestrian and cyclist access will remain available during construction. This segment of work and traffic pattern alteration are scheduled through early 2027.
High levels of noise from excavation equipment and a vacuum truck are anticipated. To accommodate this work, metered parking along Ames Street will be unavailable. Note that while pedestrian and cyclist access will remain available during the continuing construction along Ames Street, pedestrian and cyclist routes will regularly shift. Crossings from Main Campus to East Campus across Ames Street may be relocated as the work progresses. Accessible ramps will be provided where curb cuts are unavailable. Access to buildings will be maintained. Clear signage will be posted to indicate these shifts and the currently accessible routes, and a police officer will be on location.
Memorial Drive lane closures begin July 16
Beginning Wednesday, July 16, and continuing through the fall, Eversource will implement various single lane closures on Memorial Drive throughout the day between Ames Street and Vassar Street for soil boring and drilling. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked, and police will be on site.
Crews will be performing soil boring activities at various locations, starting near the Ames Street intersection and progressing west toward Vassar Street. Crews are scheduled to complete borings at multiple locations per day. Memorial Drive and adjacent pathways will remain accessible, but traffic and pedestrian pathways may be shifted or narrowed during work hours. Street parking and lane restriction signs will be clearly displayed in advance of these activities.
Shuttle stop removals in East Campus
Two stops (the MIT Health/Media Lab and the Gray Way stops) have been removed from the Tech, SafeRide, and Grocery shuttles in East Campus. Passengers are advised to board at the Kendall Square stop or the Wadsworth Street stop to access these shuttle routes. See the shuttle pages for more information.
In addition, EZRide Shuttles will be directed to alternate routes during this Eversource construction. The stops at Ames & Amherst Streets and 77 Mass Ave have been removed; a temporary stop along Vassar Street near Building 35 has been added to accomodate this disruption. Vassar Street
Beginning the week of October 6, crews from Eversource will begin test pitting activities along Vassar Street in preparation for upcoming trenching and utilities installation activities. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked, and police will be on site. Loud noise from this activity is anticipated at each of the test pit sites.
Crews are scheduled to complete borings at multiple locations per day. Vassar Street and adjacent pathways will remain accessible, but traffic and pedestrian pathways may be shifted or narrowed during work hours. Vehicular traffic is expected to remain two-way, though vehicles may be intermittently stopped as the street is narrowed to one lane. Street parking and lane restriction signs will be clearly displayed.
