INTRODUCTION TO THE NEWSSTAND MODULE
This module allows students to expand even further their sphere of investigation
and apply their cross-cultural skills to the analysis of media in the US and
in France.
Students will be able to compare:
- the front pages of the New York Times and Le Monde for a
day or for a whole week
- the type of events these two newspapers report on a daily basis: the priorities
they give to specific events and or news.
- the way they report on a same event. This will give students the opportunity
to develop insights into different reporting modes and, perhaps, uncover implicit
cultural and ideological biases.
Such a study will also help students continue developing critical skills which
they can apply to the reading of the press.
Students can read a variety of articles that will allow them to analyze:
- how the Americans and the French present themselves in their own media
- how the Americans view the French
- how the French view the Americans
- what events the French press and the American press report
- how they report one same event
- what the Americans and the French think about the issues (via the Newsstand
forums)
