Faculty Heather Cox Richardson Associate Professor of History Heather Cox Richardson received her Ph.D. in 1992 from Harvard's Program in the History of American Civilization. She is the author of The Greatest Nation of the Earth: Republican Economic Policies During the Civil War (Harvard University Press, 1997), and The Death of Reconstruction: Race, Labor, and Politics in the Post-Civil War North, 1865-1901 (Harvard University Press, 2001). Interested primarily in late-nineteenth century America, she is currently at work on Exodus, a book exploring the experience of the Southern black community during Reconstruction. It will look at African-Americans' own descriptions of local schools, the justice system, hiring practices, and will examine the importance of the image of the American West on black understanding of citizenship.She is also planning a biography of the Washburn family, ten brothers and sisters whose lives spanned the years from 1820 to 1920 and reflected most of the major economic and political developments of the nineteenth century.
