Graduate students and newly minted professors face a number of emotional challenges in academia. Among the stressors attributed to incidences of depression are feelings of isolation and a lack of social support during one’s professional development. Without these support networks and structure, graduate students and academic professionals are at risk for dropout, scholastic underperformance, and mental health problems.

To address this problem, et al., an educational initiative, is hosting a series of workshops during IAP, providing attendees with a structured process and pedagogy by which they can complete their Masters or Ph.D. thesis, following the guidelines/practices of their field. This workshop is not a substitute for advice and direction by a thesis advisor on content. Students seeking additional structure and support for the completion of the thesis should join us!

Health and Wellness Innovation 2013

John O Moore MD, PhD Candidate in Media Arts and Sciences

Enrollment: Limited: Advance sign-up required
Attendance: Participants must attend all sessions
Prereq: UI/UX and software development skills are desirable

Details including registration - http://newmed.media.mit.edu/health-and-wellness-innovation-2013

What: Health and Wellness Innovation 2013 is a two week hackathon that brings together students, health professionals, and innovators from industry to build technology that empowers patients to take control of their health.

Why: Healthcare is in crisis; every year we spend more and get less. At the core of this crisis is a lack of patient engagement. Patients are motivated to be involved, but they are consistently undervalued and marginalized. Current efforts in consumer health are fragmented and fail to leverage a common infrastructure to promote each other’s success through positive feedback. They spend most of their time solving the same problems over and over again. As a result, their ability to empower patients is limited.

This annual event forges partnerships and springboards projects to success by encouraging participants to share core technologies and by providing mentorship to push the limits of innovation in every project. It brings together key clinical, research, and industry players so that we can solve real problems and achieve real change in healthcare.

It is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the field. They work with professionals and gain experience that can lead to research funding, grad school positions, or job opportunities.

Where: MIT Media Lab - We will occupy the 6th floor for the entire event

When: January 22 - February 1, 2013

As is the nature of massage, this course is experiential and the material will be presented in lecture-demonstration, discussion, and hands-on participation. It provides guidelines for your exploration of the body-mind connection. Learning how to give and receive a good massage is an art and a science. It develops the art of trusting one’s intuition and deepening one’s knowledge from concept to wisdom. It is the practical application of internalizing the sciences of anatomy and physiology. Have fun and feel great learning something very useful for you and for others.

MIT Korean Karate Club

Poh Lim

Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up
Attendance: Participants welcome at individual sessions
Prereq: none

Come join an MIT Korean Karate Club practicce!. The MIT Korean Karate Club practices Chung Do Kwan, a traditional style of Tae Kwon Do.

We are an informal and fun-loving bunch, and we feel that getting together for two hours three times a week to do Tae Kwon Do is a great way to work off MIT stress, to stay in shape, to gain self-esteem, and to learn self-defense.

Part of the philosophy of Chung Do Kwan is no-contact sparring, allowing full power and focus without injuries. All members of the MIT Korean Karate Club learn to break wood, and many break cinderblocks, too.  Beginners are always welcome.

Participants attend lectures every Tuesday and Thursday evening and spend time outdoors during the weekends. Trips are offered at various levels of intensity and include hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, back-country skiing, ice climbing, winter camping, orienteering, and mountaineering.  Specifically, lecture topics cover essential food and clothing selection as well as the use of technical gear for hiking (snowshoes+crampons), cross country and backcountry skiing, ice climbing and more.

All levels of experience are welcome! Many smaller (10 people max) trips are run to the White Mountains every weekend by our experienced winter trip leaders. Weekend trips are optional, but by far the best part of Winter School! Equipment is available for rent from MITOC; participants will need to provide appropriate clothing (to be discussed in lectures). Those going on trips will need to share cost of gas & upkeep with drivers, as well as a nominal trip fee (covers trail fee for National Forest use). Attendance at the first two lectures (Jan 8th and 10th) is REQUIRED to participate in any of the weekend trips! The first two lectures will be in room 34-101. All subsequent lectures (Jan 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, and 31) will be in room 35-225.

Musical and Mathematical Design of Square Dance Singing Calls

Guy L. Steele Jr., MIT PhD '80

Jan/23 Wed 01:00PM-02:30PM 34-101

Enrollment: Unlimited: No advance sign-up

Square dancing in the modern style is an interesting mixture of physical movement and mental activity as dancers react in real time to whatever the square dance caller asks them to do from moment to moment. There are mental challenges for the caller, too, to take a popular song you might know—but never think of as a square-dance song—and weave the names of square dance calls into the lyrics so that it all flows and times out properly, both musically and choreographically.  Concepts from computer science as well as musicology are helpful in organizing solutions to this multidimensional optimization problem.

This talk will demonstrate a variety of singing calls with live dancers and discuss how such songs can be put together so as to keep the dancers moving while also "telling the story." It will also introduce and demonstrate the "language" of square dancing, and consider it as a kind of programming language for dance movement.

Guy L. Steele Jr. (MIT PhD '80, ACM Fellow, IEEE Fellow, National Academy of Engineering) is the co-inventor (with MIT Prof. Gerald Jay Sussman) of the Scheme programming language and wrote the first Scheme compiler.  He is a co-author of books about C, Common Lisp, High Performance Fortran, and Java, as well as The Hacker's Dictionary (MIT Press). He designed the original EMACS command set and was the first person to port TeX. He currently leads the Programming Language Research Group at Oracle Labs.

Sufi Perspectives in Meditation

Stuart Brown

Enrollment: Limited: First come, first served (no advance sign-up)
Attendance: Participants welcome at individual sessions

This class is a practical introduction to meditation for relaxation, concentration, and enhanced insight. We will place attention on our inner life as a balance to the demands of our outer life. We will enrich these basic practices with readings that draw from the poetry and other writings of the Sufis, among whom one may count the well known poets Rumi and Hafiz. There will also be opportunities for discussion. You may be wondering at this point, what is a “Sufi” ? Some have said it is "one who breathes well", or, "the son or daughter of the moment." It could be said that it applies to persons on a path of compassion and wisdom, a path whose steps are learned through direct experience, and are linked in a certain chain of transmission of teaching. What is transmitted, however, is not a dogma, ideology or intellectual "ism", but rather, it is being present to the inner dimension that is our essence. Amongst the Sufis, certain meditation practices and perspectives are used to foster conditions conducive to this mode of experience, and we will be exploring some of these in this class.

The Joy of Clinical Medicine

Dr. Louis Kuchnir, MD-PhD (MIT Alum '87)

Jan/31 Thu 07:00PM-08:00PM 4-159

Enrollment: Unlimited: Advance sign-up required
Sign-up by 01/31

Back when doctors were among the wealthiest Americans, they could have retired early, but instead they tended to work until their own health failed. Lately, clinical medicine is cast as an unrewarding profession. Observers point to how "jackpot justice" is causing a malpractice crisis while cost-savings programs developed by managed care bureaucracies are blamed for destabilizing the doctor-patient relationship.

Louis Kuchnir, MD, PhD and MIT '87 alum will try to inspire those of you interested in becoming clinicians by explaining how the rewards of medical practice are so enormous that they outweigh the indignities that dominate the headlines. In the end, modern doctors are still blessed with the same rewards as our predecessors, while technology expands our potential even beyond their dreams.
