From about 18 months on, children learn over 10 new words a day. The course will cover what is known about how infants isolate words from the speech stream, and the relations between pre-linguistic representations and lexical representations that make such efficient learning possible. One extended case study will be the child's mastery of representation of number in natural languages--the count/mass distinction, classifiers, and numerals.
