This course will be a hands-on introduction to acoustic phonetic analysis. There will be brief background discussions of acoustics terminology, digital signal processing, and the acoustic theory of speech production. Then the majority of the course will be devoted to practical measurement problems and strategies using recordings contributed by both students and teacher spanning all major classes of speech sounds from a range of languages. During this portion of the course we will discuss designing acoustic phonetic studies, field and studio techniques in recording speech, and the strengths and weaknesses of various acoustic speech analysis software packages.
