20 January 1923 Esteemed, Devoted and Much Beloved Nephew, Shloymele, Today, I received your letter and enclosed check for $150. Unfortunately, I am not able, with a mere steel pen, to express my thanks. I can only say, dear child, that as far as I can see, you have done your share. May G-d help you so that you may never know need and if, G-d forbid, you should know poverty, may your good deeds toward our uncle stand you in good stead. You have done what often a father is unable to do for his own child. What a brother is often unable to do for a brother, you my dear child have done. It is an almost unheard of deed that a sister's son should demon- strate such love and devotion as you, my dear child, have shown me. I read your letter with, as it were, a great thirst. I hope to Almighty G-d that your blessing to me may be fulfilled, because you bestow it upon me wholeheartedly. I only hope that I can see you again in my lifetime and be able to thank you personally for all your efforts. Heartfelt greetings to you, dear child, from me and my wife.
