Pedants sniff at "science fiction", critics snort at sci fi. But when you laugh at sci fi fo fum, remember! Story first, last, and in between. Character, plot, and scene. And somewhen, waving in the cracks, You've got to add the tacks, To mold it outside ordinary tracks. Turning the world on a mental lever, Bringing the reader into your fever. Not so easy to deceiver, hardly simple, eager beaver. Build a world, or a daydream, paint a human tale in metal gleam. "fantasy" we used to sneer, laughing at those silly elves, dancing in magic glens, prancing with weirdling beasts. now there's dark, high, maybe wide - and all of it seems to sell! to turn the tide again will take.. what! miracle belongs to them! Giants here, giants there, giants everywhere. But 90 percent of everything is crud. 10 percent is good writing. And 110 percent is SF. So there.
