(I wonder what it smells like?) tink ---------------------------------------- Broken Words Copyright 1993 Mike Barker Writing is a heartbeat, Snare drum head stretched tight Across empty chambers pumping bile, Red blood dripping from uncut wrists, Soft plops as a puddle ripples, Kitchen rich odor of grilling meat Where one foot screams agony in the fire! Feeling fades where the hammer falls, Taste the salt of well-bitten lips, Jesus Christ shudders on Golgatha, As the hammer falls in new bursts of pain. Yet peaceful breezes play lightly, Caress an ecology of dreamers, Force past history into future fact, Yo! Spare change, my man? Black mouth of poverty gapes, Sacrament freeing man to sin again. But as I lift the world on my palm, A joker laughs, witless humorist Seeing banana peels waiting For another great pratfall! As the rubber globe bounces, Unheard words change unthinking minds, Hide their rags in savoir faire. Trashbags huddle against the cold Heads throbbing misery. Drums beat in that bright night. ----------------------------------------
