I started to take a hesitant step, then stopped, eyes still dazzled, dancing dots of light and dark hiding the familiar hillside. I blinked, wiped at tears, and glanced down. There I saw my shadow, growing from my sandaled feet, stretched out and overlaying the shadow from behind me. I blinked again, trying to see past the pale boundaries that held those crossed shadows. Then I realized that black chi lay across my shadow, cancelling my life, marking a stop to those dreams. I rubbed at my eyes, and finally saw that the shadows were one, joined together, the still angular blackness behind me, my small, shaken, wavering blackness joined with it in that unending bright. At last, hesitant, but with a firm step and eyes open at last, I set out again, my living shadow a reflection of the sun that hung behind me and that which they tried to stop. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
