Getting and Staying Motivated
March 14, 2003
Many of you may find it challenging to get motivated and stay motivated when
it comes to healthy lifestyle changes.
If you're struggling with finding the motivation to start a walking or strength
training program, cut down on the amount of high-sugar snacks you're eating,
or lose the extra pounds you may have put on this winter, you may find this
week's e-Well Tip helpful in pushing you to put your plans into action.
REMINDERS...
Remind yourself that the end result of a stronger, healthier, more energetic
you is ahead! Not only will you feel a physical difference, but you will find
that your success will improve your confidence, increase your self-esteem, and
improve your mood.
SET SHORT-TERM GOALS...
Goal-setting is a great way to stay motivated. Set goals that you can achieve
in a one or two months - or even a week or two - it's up to you. Goals clarify
what you are trying to accomplish, and focusing on the goal can encourage you
to continue your daily healthy living. For example, if your goal is to have
an easier time carrying your groceries to your second or third floor home, you
may find it easier to complete the two strength training sessions you planned
this week. In a short time, you'll be amazed at how many bags you'll be able
to carry, and how quickly you'll be able to walk up the stairs!
DO SOMETHING YOU LIKE...
Think back at some activities you used to participate in. Do you love to play
volleyball at summer picnics? Join a volleyball team! Did you enjoy roller skating
when you were younger? Buy yourself a new pair of rollerblades for the spring
and summer! Do you love the water? Join the local YMCA or the Zesiger Center
here on campus, and enjoy a nice swim!
FIND A WORKOUT PARTNER...
Ask a friend, family member, or co-worker if they'd like to walk at lunch, join
a gym, or take a yoga class with you. Not only is exercising with someone else
more fun, but it will improve the chance that you will continue to show up at
whatever activity you've planned.
You CAN do it!
