A Safe and Healthy Spring
March 28, 2003
Now that spring has sprung, you may be tempted to get outside and try a new outdoor
activity or start up an activity that you haven't done since last summer. This
is a GREAT idea!! But before you start, please take some time to equip yourself
with what you need in order to be safe --an injury will quickly ruin a good day
outdoors!
Here are some tips for choosing equipment that will make your activities safe
and enjoyable...
TIPS FOR HIKING
* Shoes with good traction are a must! There are endless options for hiking
shoes at the large sports stores, but a good pair of running or walking shoes
may do the trick. Hiking boots, especially lightweight ones, are great for keeping
your feet dry (which is often very important when hiking). Whichever shoe you
choose - be sure they fit well - blisters can easily keep you from enjoying
your hike.
* Pack a day pack that includes water, a map of the area, a compass, a flashlight,
warm clothing, first aid kit, pocket knife, and waterproof matches.
TIPS FOR BIKING AND ROLLER-BLADING
* Wear a helmet! EVERYONE should wear a helmet, but specifically, "Massachusetts
law requires children under 13 who operate a bicycle, or who ride as a passenger
on a bicycle, on a public way or bike path to wear a properly fitted and fastened
helmet."
* Check your equipment - Be sure there is enough air in your bicycle tires before
you head out. Carry a small air pump with you. Check the wheels and breaks on
your roller-blades. If they're worn, bring them into a shop to be replaced BEFORE
the next time you plan to use them - don't let old equipment ruin your plans.
* Protect your eyes - a simple pair of sunglasses will do.
TIPS FOR WALKING AND RUNNING
* The proper shoe with the proper support is extremely important! Know what
you're looking for before you make a purchase. Will you be running or walking?
Ask for assistance from the staff at the store - ask them to suggest shoes for
your specific needs. Do not head out for a run or walk with old or worn sneakers
- you will be at risk of injuring yourself (ankles, back, etc). For more information

.
* Bring along some water - especially if you are planning a long walk or run.
* Wear comfortable clothing, and if it's cool outside, wear a light jacket
that can be removed when you are warmed up.
BE SAFE AND ENJOY YOURSELF!!
