Do you have a friend that you play cards with? ...a partner
in crime when you go shopping? ...a co-worker that you eat
lunch with? ...a weekend bowling partner? ...then what about
a friend, spouse, partner, sibling, son or daughter, or co-worker
to walk with, swim laps with, take the stairs with, or head
to the gym with?
There are many advantages to having a workout partner. Here
are a few of the benefits along with tips on finding a partner
that will help to keep you motivated and make exercising more
enjoyable.
WHO??
Most people at one time or another find themselves saying
"I should start exercising." Has anyone said that
to you lately? If you can think of someone, then you should
start there. If not, just start asking around. You may be
surprised at how easy it is to find a workout partner.
WHAT??
Think about what activities you enjoy most. Do you own a bike,
but haven't gone biking in months or maybe years? Who else
do you know that owns a bike? You and your biking partner
could discover some new routes along the shore or along the
Minuteman Bike Path.
WHY??
Exercising with a friend, co-worker, or family member will
help you to stay motivated. You will find that you look forward
to exercising more than you did when you were planning on
exercising alone. You and your workout partner can also think
of fun ways to motivate each other (buying each other inexpensive
rewards for meeting fitness goals, drawing up a fun contract
that you both have to sign), and continue to think of new
fun activities. Try walking to a live concert in the park,
biking to the beach, walking along trails or around a lake
-- get creative and enjoy your workouts.
WHEN??
Finding a time that works for both of you is essential. If
you're going to walk with a neighbor, then mornings may be
best. If you're planning on going to the gym with a co-worker,
then immediately after work may be ideal. If you're planning
to bike or swim with your spouse or partner or your children,
then you may find that being a "weekend warrior"
exerciser is best. It's important to find a time of the day
and week that fits into your schedule -- you'll be more likely
to stick with it.
NO LUCK??
If you don't have any luck in finding a workout partner, a
personal trainer is a good option. They can motivate you and
train you in a variety of different exercises and activities.
You can start by calling a gym near your home, one in the
Cambridge/Boston area, or at our own Zesiger Sports and Fitness
Center at MIT.
Your dog (or your neighbor's/friend's dog) will also be more
than happy to be your workout partner!!
