Getting Back on that Horse
October 17, 2003

If you've recently had a setback in your weight loss plan or fitness routine, you may find this week's e-Well Tip helpful in getting you back on track. Bumps in the road are normal, and should actually be expected. Whether it's a stressful time in our lives, a fabulous vacation, or a birthday weekend, there are times when our healthy habits take a "vacation" of their own. But have no fear....you can get right back on that horse (or treadmill) and get yourself back on track.

TAKE A LOOK BACK
Look back at the weeks or months that you were successful. If you keep a journal, read through and find the positive things that you did during those healthier weeks. Make a note of the steps that you took during these times, and think of how you can recreate the steps right now. Write down one or two things that you are going to do this week. Some examples may be: walking during my lunch break, packing my exercise clothes at night so they're ready in the morning, or stocking the cabinets and refrigerator with healthy foods.

WHY?
Take a moment to reflect on why you want to be healthier. What is your true motivation for exercising, eating well, or losing weight? Really think....and if your answer is "to fit into that dress for my reunion," you may need to look a bit harder to find a reason that will keep you motivated AFTER the reunion. Focus on your physical and emotional health, your family, and your quality of life. Create this list of a few "reasons why" and keep the list with you or post it in a visible spot in your home - this will serve as a daily reminder and will help you to stay motivated each day.

LOOKING GOOD AND FEELING GOOD
Are your clothes too tight? Are you uncomfortable most of the time because your waistband or belt is too small? Do you hate how you look when you leave the house? If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, it's often very difficult to have a good day or a healthy day. Your setback may be due to the fact that you're just not feeling good about yourself. The better you feel throughout the day, the more likely you are to go for that walk, choose the chicken sandwich over the cheeseburger, and on and on. Buy a few pieces of new clothing that make you feel good about yourself. Don't wait until you lose the weight - do it now! Remember....you can always donate your clothes to a charity when they become too big!

Next week's e-Well Tip will have a few more suggestions on getting and staying motivated! Stay tuned!!
