Losing Weight on the Web
June 11, 2004
It seems like there is a new diet on the market everyday. We've seen them on TV, read about them in magazines, heard about them on the radio, and now we're seeing them advertised on the Web. So, which ones are healthy? Which ones are safe? Which ones work?
This week's e-Well Tip offers suggestions on what to look for when reading about a new diet. Websites of healthy and safe weight loss plans are also listed below.
WATCH OUT FOR:
- Diets that permanently rule out specific foods or food groups
- Plans that offer "quick" and "effortless" results - healthy and long-term weight loss takes patience and effort
- Diets that include a list of health risks
- Diets that have fees attached - be sure you know what you're paying for
LOOK FOR WEIGHT LOSS PLANS THAT:
- Include and promote regular exercise
- Offer tips on healthy behavior changes (for example: dealing with emotional or stressful eating or starting an exercise plan)
- Encourage you to lose weight at a slow and steady pace - about 1 to 2 pounds per week
- Have a maintenance plan for you to follow after you've reached your weight loss goal
- Take your likes and dislikes into account and offer a large variety of foods
- Suggest that you seek a doctor's advice before beginning their weight loss plan
