:: Applications ::
UFORE and CITYgreen
have been applied to a number of study sites and cities. Analyses have
been done almost exclusively by (or in cooperation with) the NFS and American
Forests, but the have been an important advocacy tool for groups and organizations
seeking to protect and augment the urban forest (CITYgreen in particular).
Most UFORE analyses
have been done on a citywide basis, providing valuable city baseline information.
U.S. cities such as Boston,
Philadelphia,
and Baltimore
have been analyzed.
CITYgreen appears to have spread more easily and been applied more often
than UFORE (most likely because of its GIS platform and water runoff module).
Case
studies are available on CITYgreen's website. An interesting application
of CITYgreen is the Cool Schools Tree Planting Program in Los Angeles,
which used CITYgreen to model alternative scenarios on schoolyards (see
Figure 1.) With CITYgreen, the researchers modeled the environmental and
economic impacts of increasing tree cover on schoolyards (measures that
were in fact taken). The full report is available as a pdf download [here].
