This message is for members of the DEAS community who have occasion to use our general login servers, mass.deas.harvard.edu and gigue.deas.harvard.edu (aka cpu1 and cpu2). If you do not use these systems you can safely ignore the rest of this email.

The existing DEAS login servers, mass.deas.harvard.edu and gigue.deas.harvard.edu (also known as cpu1 and cpu2) are scheduled to be retired by the end of August. They have been replaced by a group of systems known collectively as login.deas.harvard.edu. The new systems are faster and have a more up-to-date selection of software.

We encourage people to use the new servers while mass and gigue are still available so that we can identify and resolve any problems before we retire the legacy servers. To connect, point your ssh client at login.deas.harvard.edu. Alternatively, if you have a Java-capable web browser, you can point it at http://login.deas.harvard.edu/ to load a Java ssh client.

Please note that while mass and gigue are running Solaris, the new login servers are running Linux. If you have any software you have compiled yourself, you will need to recompile it before it will run in the new environment.

If you encounter any problems, anomalies, or if you are unable to find a critical piece of software on the new servers, please contact DEAS IT at help@deas.harvard.edu.
