Solution: The Chimera

Written by Kevin Wald

The languages of the texts below the picture are, in order:

Klingon
Dutch
Tocharian A
Esperanto
Tagalog
German
Welsh
Catalan
Anglo-Saxon (or Old English)
Latin
Norwegian
Greek
Thai
Chinese

Each of the items pointed to in the picture has a name that can be produced by joining the "head" of one language name to the "tail" of another; from left to right these are:

THATCH = THA[i] + [Du]TCH
NORMAN = NOR[wegian] + [Ger]MAN
CHEEK = CH[inese] + [Gr]EEK
CATALOG = CATA[lan] + [Taga]LOG
LASH = LA[tin] + [Wel]SH
TONTO = TO[charian A] + [Espera]NTO

This eliminates twelve of the languages, leaving only KL[ingon] + [Anglo-S]AXON = KLAXON, which is the solution to the puzzle (and which is also hinted at by the reference to the picture as "alarming").
