This Puzzle Needs a Title

Marc Spraragen

First, solve the clues below the puzzle. Although some of them identify multiple people, only one fits in the blanks given. This leads to the following set of answers:

  1. ROGER MOORE
  2. BOB GELDOF
  3. JAMES GALWAY
  4. PAUL MCCARTNEY
  5. MICK JAGGER
  6. SEAN CONNERY
  7. RIDLEY SCOTT
  8. ANTHONY HOPKINS

When you transfer the letters to the grid, you get a mess:

*EAEIW OABAFEE
CS CSHMRK GNEO
DORO THT IRR S

Where number 1 is written under six letters, ADRSTT.

Remember now that the puzzle needs a title. The theme of the puzzle is that each of these people has received one of the British titles referred to as being knighted (Knight Bachelor, Knight Commander of the British Empire, etc.). So you need to perform a knight's tour of the board, including the black squares as spaces in the phrase you spell out. Start in square 1, where the letters spell out START with an extra D which is the letter for that square. It spells DOCTRINE FOR THOSE WHO BREAK SACRED IMAGES, ending in the S in square 36.

This clues the answer ICONOCLASM.
