Each pressed penny has some little images with arrowhead-like triangles indicating direction. Each image represents a word that, when paired with a new word, forms a compound word or phrase. For example, an image of RAIN leads to RAIN COAT, and an image of a FISH leads to CAT FISH. Each compound word is clued within one of the sentences in the blurb on the card that accompanied that coin. Teams paired up these new words such that one word was a letter deletion of the other, e.g., COAT and CAT.

Each image had a direction-triangle by it. A team could lay out their pressed pennies so that paired images' triangles pointed at each other. The layout had the additional constraint that, read from left to right, the extra-letter compound word's image is to the left of the no-extra-letter compound word's image. For example, for the pair PIG FARM, ARM CHAIR, the pig is to the left of the chair. For vertically-aligned images (that is, with no left-to-right orientation), that rule applies reading from top to bottom. E.g., for the RAIN COAT, CAT FISH pair, the rain is above the fish.

When the pennies are laid out in a grid, and the added/deleted letters are placed between the compound words they’re derived from, those letters form the message FOR THIS CENT I MINT ALL VALUE.
