PURPOSE
The Reactor
Technology Course for Utility Executives is an intensive three-week program
designed to achieve the following
goals:
respect for
nuclear safety
TARGET
AUDIENCE Nontechnical –
candidates with previous education or training in an area such as finance,
human resources, communication or law who could benefit from an understanding
of the technology related to nuclear generation in present or future
assignments Technical
(non-nuclear) – candidates with previous education or training in an area with
present or future responsibilities related to nuclear generation
Technical
(nuclear) – candidates with previous education or training in reactor
technology who would like to enhance or refresh
their knowledge to support present or future responsibilities related
to nuclear
generation
The course is designed for executives with potential for
the highest level of responsibility who have any of the following
backgrounds:
COURSE
DESIGN
The course is
presented in an interactive style that challenges participants and applies their
experiences indeveloping a fundamental understanding of
commercial nuclear electric generating technology. It emphasizesthe fundamentals of nuclear technology by focusing on the behavior of the
reactor core and on critical safetyfunctions. Content
explains the behavior of the core under normal, off-normal, and emergency
conditions. Theneed for conservative, prudent
decision-making is emphasized through examples and during laboratory,
researchreactor, and simulator exercises.
Operating
experiences, including the lessons learned from the accidents at Three Mile
Island and Chernobyl, areused to show relevance and to
reinforce participants’ understanding of the need for vigilance and
constantmaintenance of defense-in-depth. The unique physical
and institutional demands inherent in nuclear poweroperations are emphasized.
The course is held
Participant
lodging is at the Cambridge Residence Inn adjacent to the MIT campus. Rooms are
suite arrangement with complete kitchens. The
Reactor Technology Course rate is $185 plus tax. Hotel reservations
are made by INPO upon acceptance into the
course.
