This paper is very entertaining, very readable, and for students of computer systems it seems to explain a lot of personal observations. Finding things to discuss is a challenge, because Lucky makes valid points that are hard to argue with.

Lucky says that predicting the future is hard. What are heuristics that have been developed to predict it?

  • Randomness: used to make ``not-very-bad'' vs. good predictions
  • Analogies of past situations This course is about complex systems. Lucky says that predicting future is hard. A stronger statement holds for complex systems: ``predicting'' the past, present and future of a complex system is hard. How to predict past/present?
    Two types of innovation Lucky seems to discuss: When can 16 year olds be viable competition to experts/big companies? Lucky describes a curious innovation scenario:
