A Brief Biography of David R Bacher

Dave Bacher was born and bred in Bloomington, Indiana. He graduated with honors from Bloomington High School South in June of 1990 and left his hometown in search of knowledge and excitement. Arriving in Boston in September of 1990 at the invitation of MIT, he decided that engineering was the way to go.

Dave majored in Computer Science and recently gradauted from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is often busy doing research and playing with video in the Telemedia Networks and Systems group, part of MIT's Lab for Computer Science.

In the fall, Dave plans to journey off to graduate school in Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley. He is interested in researching current issues in Human-Computer Interaction and distributed computing environments.

As for other activities, Dave is the Director of Broadcasting of MIT's Student Cable Group. Until recently, he co-hosted a talk show on MIT Cable about the latest episode of Star Trek called STAY-TUNED. MIT Student Cable is always looking for new members, if you're interested in putting together a TV show here at MIT, send e-mail to student-cable@mit.edu.

In addition, Dave used to frequently play basketball and Ultimate, where he earned his nickname "Zip," until he busted his ACL. On May 31, he underwent surgery to reconstruct this ligament in his left knee. He intends to resume playing basketball and Ultimate as soon as his reconstructed ligament has healed. In the meantime, he continues to cheer the efforts of the Indiana University Hoosiers (including the sometimes amusing antics of Coach Bobby Knight) and Random Hall's numerous IM teams.

Classic Television

(Mary and her boss, Lou Grant)

[switch to first person] I'm a big fan of a couple classic TV shows including the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show. As far as I'm concerned, these shows are the best representatives of classic American Television, just listen to the Mary Tyler Moore theme song. Back in those days, simple deadpan comedy was funny. I am now a faithful devotee of Nick at Night which broadcasts DVD and MTM late at night amist commercials for Ovaltine and Gold Bond Medicated Powder.

The Animaniacs

(Yakko, Dot and Wakko)

I also love watching The Animaniacs: Produced by Steven Spielberg and situated on the Warner Brothers Movie Lot, it is one of the best new cartoons in existence today. Its main characters Yakko, Wakko and Dot exemplify pure wackiness, unadultured by any aspect of sanity. The cartoon features a wide variety of skits with at least a dozen recurring characters. In addition to its general zaniness, the cartoon often features (and parodies) the likenesses of popular celebrities.

Here are a few choice lines from the Pinky and the Brain skits: (If you don't understand why this is funny, watch The Animaniacs!)

Brain: Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Pinky: I think so Brain, but ...

Disclaimer: I have no connection with the production of, distribution of, or revenue generated by this cartoon aside from the fact that I enjoy watching it.
