The Seattle Mariners have announced that 135 of their 162 regular season games in 1999 will be televised locally, one shy of the club record set last season. In addition, four spring training games will also be shown locally with the first telecast just 26 days away on March 14. The Seattle Mariners will open their 23rd season on Monday, April 5 in the Kingdome against the Chicago White Sox. For the first time ever, the Mariners will televise Opening Day on their cable home, FOX Sports Northwest. Game time is 7:35 p.m. The Seattle Mariners' over-the-air television partner KIRO-TV, Channel 7, will televise 41 games and as part of KIRO's over-the-air package, KSTW-TV, Channel 11, will air 22 additional games. Meanwhile, the Mariners' cable partner FOX Sports Northwest will telecast 62 games, equaling their largest total set in 1998. The remaining 10 broadcasts will be a part of nationally televised games on the FOX network (seven games on KCPQ-TV, Channel 13 locally) and ESPN (three games). FOX Sports Northwest will air 43 home games, 19 road games and one spring training game on Friday, March 26 vs. the Colorado Rockies from Peoria, AZ at 6:05 p.m. PT. In addition to carrying the games, FOX Sports Northwest will continue to air a 30-minute, pre-game show "Mariners Warmup" prior to every Mariners home game shown on the regional cable network. FOX Sports Northwest will also air an hour-long pre-season special, entitled "Mariners Preview '99," following the spring training game on March 26 at 9:00 p.m. PT. FOX Sports Net Northwest provides 24-hour sports programming to 2.5 million viewers in its five-state region covering Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. KIRO-TV will begin its regular season coverage on Tuesday, April 5 when the Seattle Mariners take on the White Sox in the second game of the season and will also televise the inaugural game from SAFECO FIELD on Thursday, July 15 at 7:05 p.m. The KIRO-TV's 41-game schedule includes six home games, 35 road games and one spring training game on Saturday, March 27 vs. the Anaheim Angels. The spring game will be aired at 7:30 p.m. PT on a tape-delayed basis immediately following the NCAA Final Four semi-finals. KIRO-TV will again carry a monthly special on the Seattle Mariners, including an hour-long pre-season special, entitled "On Deck With the Mariners," that will air on Friday, March 19 at 9:30 p.m. The Seattle Mariners TV network also includes: KWPB-TV, Channel 32 in Portland; KSKN-TV, Channel 22, in Spokane; KTBY-TV, Channel 4, in Anchorage; KEVU-TV, Channel 25, in Eugene; an KEBB-TV, Channel 60, in Yakima.
