M. I. T. LIVE! EVENT-ACTION POB Saturday, September 9, 1989 8:00pm CAMERA SHOTS ____________ Name Description ____ ___________ Opening Close-up of monitor in bldg. 9, defocused. As music starts, focus, then zoom back to Steve-monitor shot. Steve-monitor Shows Steve, the telephone, and monitor. Steve-tight Shows Steve's head and the faux-granite background. Chris-desk Shows Chris in the right half of the screen, with the "Information Desk" sign to his left. He must be in exactly the right half, because we will use this shot for split screens. Chris-tight Shows just Chris's head. Multiscreen Shows Steve and "screen matrix." Chris must be in the left half of the remote camera. This shot is always begun from Chris-tight, and once he is zoomed into place on the left half of the screen, the building 9 set fades in. Split-screen A combination of Steve-monitor and Chris-Desk. This shot begins with a plain Steve-monitor or Chris-desk shot. Of course, other shots will be used to get people in the Student Center asking questions, but once Chris begins to discuss the question with Steve, one of the standard shots should be used so that we can show them both on the screen simultaneously. Try to get people to ask questions from the right side of the screen, so that we can go to a multiscreen shot as soon as Steve has something to say. [lights turn Theme Title off; fade to black] Fade out theme ON TAPE _______ These are the questions asked on the tape. Introduce: YESTERDAY, SHELDON PACOTTI ASKED PEOPLE AROUND M. I. T. FOR THEIR QUESTIONS FOR THE INFORMATION MAN. LET'S SEE IF WE CAN ANSWER THEM. Q1. [Sheldon introduces himself, and explains the premise. The man being interviewed rambles for quite a while, and Sheldon summarizes his question.] How old is building 7? ______________________ Q2. [This question is poorly asked. This is just a summary.] Where should a person draw the line between the rights of a ___________________________________________________________ victim of harassment and the accused harasser? ______________________________________________ The MIT Policy on Harassment: [Read alternating paragraphs?] [C: Well, Steve, here at MIT,] HARASSMENT OF ANY KIND IS UNACCEPTABLE AND IS IN CONFLICT WITH THE POLICIES AND INTERESTS OF THE INSTITUTE. MOREOVER, MANY FORMS OF HARASSMENT HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED AS VIOLATIONS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS LAWS, BY THE U.S. EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION, AND BY THE COURTS. [S: Right, Chris. I understand that] HARASSMENT IS DEFINED AS VERBAL OR PHYSICAL CONDUCT WHICH HAS THE INTENT OR EFFECT OF UNREASONABLY INTERFERING WITH AN INDIVIDUAL'S OR GROUP'S EDUCATIONAL AND/OR WORK PERFORMANCE AT MIT OR CREATING AN INTIMIDATING, HOSTILE, OR OFFENSIVE EDUCATIONAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT ON OR OFF CAMPUS. HARASSMENT ON THE BASIS OF RACE, COLOR, SEX, RELIGION, NATIONAL ORIGIN, OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION INCLUDES HARASSMENT OF AN INDIVIUAL IN TERMS OF A STEREOTYPED GROUP CHARACTERISTIC, OR BECAUSE OF THAT PERSON'S IDENTIFICATION WITH A PARTICULAR GROUP. WITH REFERENCE TO SEXUAL HARASSMENT, THE DEFINITION ALSO INCLUDES UNWELCOME SEXUAL ADVANCES AND REQUESTS FOR SEXUAL FAVORS WHICH MIGHT BE PERCEIVED AS EXPLICITLY OR IMPLICITLY AFFECTING EDUCATIONAL OR EMPLOYMENT DECISIONS CONCERNING AN INDIVIDUAL. [C: Good point. So, to answer the question posed, I'd say that] ANY MEMBER OF THE MIT COMMUNITY WHO BELIEVES THAT HE OR SHE HAS BEEN HARASSED IS ENCOURAGED TO RAISE THE ISSUE, OR LODGE A COMPLAINT, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ESTABLISHED GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES OF MIT DESCRIBED IN SECTION 3.24 OF THE MIT DOCUMENT "POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: A GUIDE FOR FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS." Q3. Is abortion right? [You could claim that this is a biased __________________ question and refuse to answer it. This could be a general technique for dealing with questions.] Q4. Is it right to kill defenseless rats [Sheldon cries] for ____________________________________ ___ scientific research? ____________________ Q5. [The rest of the questions are dubbed. Try not to let the show get this far out of hand. Sheldon could call these in from next door.] I wonder how to get to building 8 from here. ____________________________________________ Q6. Are Tampax tampons as safe as they say they are? ________________________________________________ Q7. Was it Voyager I or Voyager II that flew by Neptune? ____________________________________________________ Q8. [something about the Prime Minister of Pakistan] __________________________ Q9. Is the Bible the revealed truth of God? _______________________________________ Q10. I wonder if I would like it on Neptune. _______________________________________
