BIOGRAPHY

George Ruckert
Senior Lecturer in Music. MA, Music Theory and Composition, Queens College; Gayan Vadya Bid, Ali Akbar College, Ph.D., Ethnomusicology, UC Berkeley. After receiving a master's in western theory and composition, he became a student of the renowned Indian sarodist, Ali Akbar Khan in 1967. A co-founder and administrator of this master's important center for North Indian classical music in California, he has also performed and taught this music widely in the US, Canada, India, and Europe, and has composed for orchestra, film, and dance productions, as well as published five books on the classical music of North India. His recent publication of the fiddle music of Cape Breton's John Campbell will be published this year.

Santha Bhaskar
A graduate of the Chempakassary Nartakalayam in Kerala, Mrs. Santha Bhaskar mastered Bharata Natyam and Katha Kali under the guidance of the late Ramunni Panicker, Guru Kunchu Kurup and Kutralam Ganesam Pillai. She holds a diploma in Karnatic music from the Tamil Nadu Government and studied Odissi dance at the Rabindra Bharathy University in Calcutta and traditional Thai dance and music at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

Mrs. Santha Bhaskar is a winner of numerous awards and titles, including Natyakala Nidhi conferred by the great poet Sudhananda Bharathair in 1964, the Kala Ratna Award from the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society, the Kala Rani from the Indian Film and Arts Society and the prestigious national Cultural Medallion in 1990.

As a choreographer, Mrs. Santha Bhaskar is known for her sensitive compositions and character developments.

Presently, Mrs. Santha Bhaskar teaches at Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society and The Centre for the Arts, NUS. She is well known for her contribution to the development of Indian classical dance in Singapore and is presently the Artistic Director of the only full-time Indian dance company, Bhaskar's Arts Academy, in Singapore.
