DESCRIPTION: I stayed with Randy Hester and his wife Marcia McNally in the house they had just bought. Randy grew up in Hesters Store, several miles from Wheelers Church. A professor of landscape architecture at Berkeley, he grew up growing tobacco, and his son Nate, an artist, now lives on the family farm. “I don’t know anyone over by Wheelers Church,” Randy told me, “It’s another world over there.” But Reuben Bowes knew Randy: “He’s fixing up my house.” The house Randy and Marcia bought had belonged to Mr. Bowes’ grandfather.
