DESCRIPTION: There is no meat market or soda fountain in Buena today, and the gas station is boarded up and covered with graffiti. The library is a bright spot. Children, mostly Hispanic, come and go: borrowing books, working on computers. The librarian is a retired teacher, the library her “hobby.” She was glad to see Lange’s 1939 photograph of Buena and to find it on the Library of Congress Web site along with others of the Yakima Valley. I remarked on Lange’s many 1939 photographs of children working in the fields. She replied, “Children still do.”
