DESCRIPTION: Minard Hart, who has been riding ditch for more than twenty years, adjusts a gate on the Owyhee Canal. Another ditch rider explained the job: “I ride the ditches every day. I clear the brush so the water can run. I’ve got 200 customers. I keep the accounts. A farmer’ll call me up and say he needs three foot of water. I put in the order, and the dam releases three foot of water. Then I make sure it gets to them.” When the water is running – from April to mid-October, seven days a week – there are no days off.
