To see is the root of idea, linguistically, and, for me, literally.
Noticing something makes me see something I hadn't seen, helps me discover
what cannot be seen directly or only at a different scale, from a different
point of view. Which prompts me to question, seek answers, and find
connections among seemingly unrelated things: valley bottom and vacant
land; rock, volcano, hot spring, the formation of continents, oceans,
and atmosphere; a blue band rising on the horizon at dusk, the Earth.
Recognizing pattern, I can imagine what I cannot see: water underground,
eroding; continental plates colliding; the Earth as a sphere, turning.
