TOPIC

Can I use EDO memory in my Macintosh computer?

DISCUSSION

EDO (Extended Data-Out) Memory is DRAM chip technology that provides increased performance in systems that support it. Current Apple products do not take advantage of the EDO memory scheme, but future versions of memory controllers used in Macintosh computers will. In some current Apple products, you can use EDO memory even though you will not derive any benefits from doing so. In other products, however, Apple does not recommend their use, and may damage your computer.

Macintosh Computers that CAN use EDO memory

* Although you will not derive any performance benefits by using EDO DIMMs, you can use them in Power Macintosh 7500, 7600, 8500, and 9500 computers.

Macintosh Computers that CANNOT use EDO memory

* You cannot use EDO DIMMs in the Power Macintosh 7200 computer. Using EDO memory in the Power Macintosh 7200 computer can cause damage to the logic board and to the DIMMs. Because of this, Apple does not support using EDO memory in the Power Macintosh 7200 computer. Any damage incurred from using EDO memory in the Power Macintosh 7200 computer may not be covered under Apple Computer's limited hardware warranty.

* Apple is currently investigating the use of EDO memory in the Power Macintosh 5400 computer, but at this time they have not been fully tested and are not supported or recommended. The Famous Apple!
