Forest Block

The Urban Forest for the Mill Creek area is geared toward the students at Sulzberger. It will provide an outside classroom where students will learn about the landscape as a place where they can feel sheltered, safe and secure! The commanding elements of the forest will include................. 1)a sense of enclosure around the periphery, 2)a commanding entrance or gateway system that lends itself to the students, 3) a play area, and finally 4)a prospect and refuge area. As a designer, to really understand the approach depends on how effectively we ask proper questions!!. Where is the gateway? How do I make the gateway in such a manner that it will have a certain affinity to the students... Where is the space? Where is the corridor? How does one go from one space to another, and how does it feel to go through these spaces as a young african-american child living in the so called,"Bottom"? What will it take to give these kids a sense of control over their lives? What will empower them to look toward the future with confidence!!! I believe the environment can play a critical role in the outcome of their future.
