Transforming the Urban Landscape - LARP 601

Urban Nature

Abstract

Our focus in Urban Nature, as the title suggests, is centered around topics that contrast the built form of West Philadelphia to its natural state.

Nature, elusive as it is, is easily disregarded in cities. The televised service oriented lifestyles many people enjoy makes suspending disbelief fairly easy. Even a steamy heat wave in August or a valley created by a hidden river is masked by city life until we are forced to react with a broken air conditioner or a flat tire. The following topics, although presented independent of each other, are clearly not. Each is a powerful and defining element that, when combined, lead to the creation of landscapes as we know them today and doubtless tomorrow.

Topography

Geology

Vegetation

Climate

Water
