A Journey Through Time

 Introduction

The golf course of the Mill Creek Community is Designed to reflect the scenario of development that took place in the area since it was a completely natural undisturbed area.
The area of the project was a typical dense eastern forest. The forest had a beautiful nature, rich with trees, pure & clear rivers. The most amazing feature of the forest was the beautiful colorful trees at fall, which gives a very obvious since of the seasons cycle.
The cycle of seasons represents the power of nature expressed by the ability to come back. All of that was perfect until man interfered.
At the beginning it was a minimal interference represented by

The Lenape Indians. They were very aware of nature in fact they were treating nature as an equal. That's why the disturbance caused at that era was minimal. The Indians enjoyed the products of nature but did not abuse it.

When the colonial period started, the feeling of superiority over nature started effecting the environment, most of the people did not feel the beauty of a natural space as it is, they looked to nature as something that have potentials to enhance there life, but still the effect was limited. Not every one had the capability to do that. It is when the industrial revolution started, that nature abuse got lunched with a maximum power. Every thing was possible, if we can make use of something, why not using it. The problem with that is lack of knowledge. If people knew about the counter effects of abusing nature they would not treat it the same way they did. The grid pattern of the Mill Creek community is the best example of that era.

That was followed by the modern age where natural knowledge was expanded and better technology is helping correcting the errors of the past, never the less more abuse is taking place due to the minimal contact people have with nature. There is always hope in every crises, and this site is dedicated to bind people back with nature, make them realize the vast and harsh kind of transformation we made threw experiencing the main stages of transformation occurred on the site.

The main natural factor adjacent to the site is the swell at the eastern border of the site. The land is in a plateau form with steep slopes at the north and the east, 1:1 slope at some areas, that is where the major drainage lines are. The plateau has a gentle slope dropping from east to west. Some large plants are at the edges of the plateau including some Oaks that are in good condition.
The open space on the plateau is a manmade formation, used currently for active recreational activities, and partly for parking.

The site is located at the south east corner of the intersection of Haverford Ave. and 48th St. The site is in an elevated land with a colonial large building at it’s south eastern corner. There is a housing project at the eastern part of the land at the bottom of the elevated area. There is a parking lot south of the selected site.
Large trees are scattered at the edges of the elevated land (the darker gray of the open space).
