it is human nature to mark out one's own territory
we mark territory when we play games, when
we make rules; we mark territory when we build.
sometimes someones territory is taken from
them leaving a feeling of exasperation and helplessness. many people in
west philadelphia live according to this reality.
as landscape architects marking the creation
of new (or old) territories, we must confront the reality of urban life
in west philadelphia. how can we give hope in a seemingly hopeless situation?
how do we mark territory for others?
the ground is the former pleasure gardens of
the Philadelphia hospital. In order to re-appropriate this ground a process
oriented design is proposed to engage the community into marking their rightful
territory.
