Revealing Urban Waters


In the area of West Philadelphia,there used to be many streams flowing across. And Mill Creek is the largest stream that detains about two-thirds of water drainage. Running through West Philadelphia, the Mill Creek shaped this area to be a valley and a mill pond.
In the late 1800s, Mill Creek was buried in city sewers. People filled in the streambed, built their houses,and placed the roads over it.

However, from that time to now, the Milll Creek still flows beneath this area. And the dramatic topography created by the forces of water still exists. Mill Creek now carries the rain that falls on much of West Philadelphia as well as sewage from thousands of private homes and businesses. Most people might not realize the existence of this creek but in real, the Mill creek is still alive.
Revealing Urban Waters is a sketch problem proposed as the first phase of a larger, long-term project to restore urban waters, landscape, and community. The major intention of this project is to reveal the existence of Mill Creek and to celebrate urban waters. Hopefully, as soon as people realize the importance of these urban waters, they will start to care for and maintain the urban natural resources.
To reveal the existence of Mill Creek, I proposed the concept of senses of water. Eventhough waters cannot be seen, it can be sensed. The senses of water appeared as my design idea are
