Makia
Anderson | Re-designing Mill Creek |
4223 Otter Street |
I, Makia Anderson would like to redesign the area of North 47th and Aspen Streets, A.K.A. Mill Creek. I would re-build the area by making a water play area to save and store water. The play area will have grass and dirt all over so the dirt can suck up the water from the sprinklers. In this area, there will be a pond. The pond will be at least three feet deep. There will be tables and benches for the kids and the adults to sit on. There will be swings, sliding boards, and other things for the kids to play on. The area will have all kinds of trees and flowers. There will be a field for people to play baseball, football, kickball, soccer, and racing, and an area for basketball. Mill Creek is a community where a lot of people don't know anything about the Mill Creek, or don't care. All of the flooding in Mill Creek has caused cave-ins, back in the day.

In 1750, Indians lived here in West Philadelphia. They lived in villages until they died from diseases. They were called Arronomink. It was like a big forest with a lot of trees. They grew their food and hunted. They fished in the Schuykill and in Mill Creek. They grew fields of corn, squash and beans. They used footpaths to travel from one village to another. The Indians left around the 1750's, but there is still evidence of their occupation in the landscape today. The tribe Lenape named Lancaster Pike. It was an Indian road. Other places in Philadelphia have Indian names such as Wylousin St., home of the old wayer, and Schuykill, the noisy stream. They sold their land to William Penn.
