47th and Aspen St.

4126 W. Parrish St.

Hi, my name is Lakisha Jenkins, and I am a student from section #281 of Sulzberger Middle School. I am going to write all about 47th And Aspen, like what the problems are and how they are going to get fixed. At the end we will talk about some of the history.

On 47th and Aspen St., are these small blocks with a couple of houses that need to be taken down and rebuilt because they look very awful and have lots of graffiti on the back and on the sides. In the street there is a big pavement, blocking off the whole street from going one way. Over from the houses there is a big dirt lot with nothing in it but dirt and trash. Now, if someone was going to pay me a big award to make 47th and Aspen look better than it already is, I would say, "sure", and take the offer.

The government didn't do anything, so we will try to help the neighborhood the best way we can. And now we have the help of the students of University of Penn. After we finish all the work, Penn students Martin, Liz, and Charlie will try to help us be recognized for all the work we did this year. We are going to re-write all of the information that we learned this year and summarize it to 1-2 pages. When we are done writing our paper, the Penn Students will help us make a book about all the information we learned this year. Thanks, Glenroy Anderson.

The first thing I would do is to tear down all of the houses and rebuild them all. After that, I could remove that big pavement that is blocking cars from going up and down the street. While I am moving the pavement out of the way, I could make the street over, and then put a street light or stop signs on the corner. For all of these green little poles, I will fix them up straight, then paint them over and then put eight more down on the other corners, too, so that cars would come through that little street that we come out of school on. I will do all of the pavements over and put eight flower pots on the pavements, just so that it could look nice. I would put eight picnic tables in the street where the cars could not come through.

And last, over at the dirt lot, I'll clean all of the trash out and build a small playground for the little people and put a sprinkler there also. That will be out in the summer time. I will build a gate around the little playground, and over the other side I will build a huge arcade room for children only so that they can have something else to do besides go swimming all of the time. I'll put a Pizza Palace in there so that they can have something to eat while they are playing the games.

Now my work is done and I have my big award that I got, and 47th and Aspen looks better than ever. Back around the 1900's, around that neighborhood, peoples homes used to always have cave-ins when it would rain because of the sewer pipes. Millions of people had died and some just got out and lived. They would go over to Sulzberger Middle School and stay over there, as in live over there, for a shelter home. Most of the people who were in cave-ins who didn't die are still living today.
