The Past and Present of Mill Creek

120 N. Yewdall St.

Hello. My name is Tyshara Owen. I am in section 281 at Sulzberger Middle School. I will tell you a little about the history of mill Creek. The Mill Creek pipe was built over 100 years ago. It took ten years to build the pipe (from 1850 to 1860). People decided to build houses over the Mill Creek. .

In 1961, there was a large cave-in. Houses caved in because of the Mill Creek sewer. People came to Sulzber Middle School, built in 1923, for shelter. After they fixed the pipe, it started flooding. the flooding is caused by backed up sewage and a pipe that is too small. When the pipe gets full from rainwater, it starts cracking. I feel as though the pipe needs to be bigger and made of a stronger material.

I am also designing a proposal for restoring urban waters in the Mill Creek neighborhood. I am working on the waterplay area which is on 47th and Aspen Street. At the present time, the pool has been abandoned. It will be too dangerous for children to play. My goal is to create a better place for the young people in the neighborhood. They deserve a better place

The pool will be replaced by a geyser. The geyser willl be a least 20 by 20 feet. In place of the field there will will be a small pond. Around the pond there would be a soft like material. On the outside of the pond there would be colorful decorations. On the inside there would be small fishes. The pond would be made out of see through stone. It will be at least three feet high so the little ones would not be able to climb in it.

The pond would have a pipe connected to the geyser. When the geyser gets full, the water will run into the pond. The water would already be cleaned and purified. Above the geyser is the tank house. I plan to rebuild the playground. It will be bigger and better.
