A History of the Mill Creek Area, 1400-1990's

5010 W. Stiles St.

I am Cleveland Pickett of the Sulzberger Middle School. Through the past six months (January-June), we have been working with University of Pennsylvania's finest students (Pisan, Ben, Clayton, Heather, Charlie, Martin, Liz and Prof. Spirn). My group leader was Pisan. Through the months of hard work, now not only do we live in the area, but we know about the area.

Before Mill Creek was all playgrounds and buildings, believe it or not, it was all woodlands and forest. Many people, like the Indians that were settled here, hunted or farmed. They used many kinds of animal skins for clothing. They planted corn, squash, and beans. They hunted for things such as deer, elk, buffalo, and bear. They used boats to go from place to place, and also for hunting. They also used horses for transportation and hunting. If they didn't have any of these, they would use their bare feet.

During the 1960's, Mill Creek had a very awful tragedy. Four row-homes caved in and collapsed. The long giant pipe from the Mill Creek had broken, and many were injured. The Sulzberger Junior High School took care and sheltered the victims from that very horrible accident.

Also during that decade, another big story in that decade was the highrises and the lowrises of Mill Creek. These two buildings were designed by Louis Kahn. They are still standing to this day.
