Safyia
Ruffin
Water Garden

4533 Merion Ave.

Hello. My name is Safyia Ruffin of Sulzberger Middle School, section #281. I plan to show you a great way to reclaim 47th and Aspen Street. This street is located on the side of Mayer Sulzberger Middle School which was built in 1923. Since is was built, it has been part of Mill Creek. That is why we are talking about Mill Creek.
1. benches 2. trees 3. fountain 4. playground 5. pool 6. skating rink 7 day care and activity center 8. tropical flowers surrounding the paths 9. four way sign telling you where you are

I thought that it would be nice to create a four way path. In the center you will have a lovely fountain that shoots out water that will hit the flowers surrounding the walkway. In front of the gate, there will be different plaques with the names of everyone who helped. The garden will have:

The history of Mill Creek is interesting. Back in the 1700's, the Mill Creek area was the land of the Lenape Indians. Lancaster Avenue was their trail which is over two thousand years old. The Lenape Indians were also called the yellow back Indians. In 1609, the first Europeans came to the area. 1800 was the beginning of the making of the Mill Creek pipe. In 1860, the stream had been piped and made history. In the 1950's and 1960's, the pipe began to crack. There were cave-ins all over the place. In 1966, two years after the most damaging cave-in, they started repairing it. This was between Market and Haverford Avenues. In 1977, they were building houses where the houses kept sinking into the ground.
