A bog is a type of wetland that receives most of its water supply from rainfall. It occurs in formerly glaciated regions. They have thick layers of accumulated peat. Peat accumulates because unlike in other wetlands the water of bogs is highly acidic and the bacteria and other decomposers cannot survive. Peat may accumulate in deposits of 30-40 feet.
