1998 Tournament ResultsIn 1998 the contest was run jointly at Harvard-MIT, Rice University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Here are the final results from all three sites: Individual, Team, and Sweepstakes (Composite)
ErrataUnfortunately we're not perfect, so there were a few small mistakes. Fortunately, none of them affected any of the results because they were all caught in the grading room. Here are a few corrections: [Note: awards given at the awards ceremony are final.] - Advanced Topics #6 has the answer of 372, not 370. We leave it as an exercise for the reader to find the addition error in the solution.
- Calculus #9: The solution does not justify that the constant of integration is 0. We leave it as an exercise for you to justify this.
- Power Question Part IIIb. should read chi + chi bar >= 2*sqrt(v), not chi * chi bar. For a counterexample consider the graph with v = 1. Note that the incorrect statement holds if v >= 4. The solution given is for the corrected version of the problem; the question was actually graded on a 4 point scale with 4 points given for finding a counterexample.
- The national results read at the awards ceremony did not include the complete results from the other sites (the lists above are complete). Some local ties were broken by a slightly different algorithm than that used for the national rankings.
