A fluorescent tube swings at the end of a long plexiglass rod. it is made to rotate and then brought near the VdG generator. The tube lights up when pointing radially away from the VdG. The same can be done with a small neon tube. Also, the tubes can be hand-held and made to flash by grounding. This demonstration is done only with the large VdG.
