A course manual will be given to you at the beginning of the term. You are responsible for the following:
Several reports are required during the term. You'll write several progress reports, a group draft report and a final report. All of these reports are read by the teaching staff and by a writing instructor. A writing instructor is assigned to this course and satisfactory work on three of the progress reports will pass the student through Phase 2 of the MIT Writing Requirement. All the students who have not already passed the Writing Requirement pass it while taking course 10.26. Your final grades are heavily dependent on the ability to write and the grade reflects the level reached at the end of the term. We do not average.
The writing instructor reads, but does not grade, the first draft of the proposals. All the student reports are sent to your industrial consultant.
You'll attend talks by other students and so you can discover the other interesting areas of Chemical Engineering and see how other types of research are being done. The atmosphere during the talks is kept similar to a professional meeting. Projectors and all equipment are provided. Refreshments are served during a break, formal dress is suggested. You'll attend the talks for about three or four afternoons during the term.
